Bourns Hot Swap Applications
Bourns Hot Swap Applications enable the addition or removal of hardware components to a server or data center system, with an operational and fully powered-on system. This technology is a cornerstone of "five nines" (99.999%) availability, eliminating the need to shut down systems for routine maintenance, hardware upgrades, or failed part replacements. The design uses a hot-swap controller with current sensing and capacitor discharge to limit inrush current and protect downstream servers during plug-in events. The next-gen datacenters will use an 800V DC bus, a discharge resistor, and a PTVS rated at 800V. The TVS diodes provide robust transient and surge protection on the DC bus. The precision current-sense resistors and wirewound power resistors ensure accurate current monitoring, controlled discharge, and reliable handling of high power and pulse loads. These components enable safe hot-swap operation, improved system reliability, and protection of sensitive server electronics in high-voltage data center environments.
PTVS Diodes
The Power TVS Diodes provide outstanding secondary protection for DC bus applications and tighter clamping with superior speed over traditional MOV technology. These bidirectional diodes feature a 15V to 470V standoff voltage and 1kA to 20kA, 8/20µs maximum peak current, available in through-hole and SMD packages.
Current Sense Resistors
The current-sense resistors are bare-metal SMD shunts for precision current monitoring, and all three blocks will incorporate some form of current monitoring for accurate switching characteristics. These resistors feature 0.2mΩ to 5mΩ resistance range, 1.5W to 15W power rating, and 1%, 2%, and 5% tolerance.
Capacitor Discharge Wirewound Resistors
The capacitor discharge wirewound resistors are known for precision and robustness and are used for high-precision applications and to manage high-power and pulse loads. These resistors feature 0.02kΩ to 260kΩ resistance range, 1W to 15W power rating, 0.01% to 10% tolerance, and ±20PPM/°C low TCR.
NTC Thermistors
The NTC thermistors are compact, surface-mount components that provide precise temperature sensing and compensation. These devices offer stable electrical performance and tight tolerance options, making them ideal for managing thermal conditions in applications like mobile devices, LED lighting, and battery packs.
Thermal Jumper Chip
The thermal dissipation is a unique SMD that offers high thermal conductivity while maintaining insulating properties. These devices feature 170W/mK thermal conductivity, high insulation resistance, -55°C to 155°C operating temperature range, and low capacitance.
